This month, the Corn Exchange, Newbury will launch Ageing Creatively, an artistic programme for older people with an open afternoon on Friday 28 October.

Held in the Corn Exchange’s foyer spaces, the interactive afternoon of fun, family activities is open to people of all ages to help celebrate the launch of Ageing Creatively. Visitors will have the opportunity to sample activities featured in the new initiative, including ‘cut and paste poetry’ and paper crafts and have a chat over a cup of tea.

There will also be information about the different ways in which local people can get involved, whether as a participant, a volunteer helping to shape the programme, or as an organisation interested in the possibility of running future sessions. All activities will be supported by the Corn Exchange and Dementia Friends, who will be there running information sessions for local artists, tutors and practitioners. Newbury Library, nocturn Dance and Newbury College will also be there to celebrate the launch.

The Corn Exchange Newbury successfully secured funding for Ageing Creatively from the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund earlier this year, in order to establish an artistic programme to benefit older people living in West Berkshire. Delivered by skilled artists and practitioners, the programme aims to provide quality social and leisure engagement to help them to maintain their independence and well-being. Activities and courses will include dance classes, a choir, a visual arts project and an intergenerational poetry project between children and older people.

The Corn Exchange’s Ageing Creatively Coordinator, Harriet Wyatt said: ‘Creative sessions provide an opportunity for people to come together and socialise in a fun, informal environment. Participants might learn a new skill, rediscover a hobby or perform to the public for the first time. We are really interested in hearing from anyone over 55 who would like to take part in the programme or would like to learn a little bit more about what is already planned.

Ageing Creatively builds upon the successful learning and participation programme Get Involved at the Corn Exchange, Newbury and New Greenham Arts. Get Involved provides a range of opportunities to learn, participate and socialise through creative activities with your local community.
